We wanted a lot of bass, so we made a big subwoofer.
Its dimensions are 2’ x 2’ x 2.5’, with a 6” diameter port (to make it even louder). The resonant frequency of the volume of air inside the port is 23hz. The inside of the box is highly braced with 2 x 3s to make a relatively light-weight, yet very strong enclosure.
Since the amplifier we used to drive the subwoofer isn’t very powerful, we selected a driver designed for live, outdoor concerts, because of its high-efficiency.
Then, we put a QR code on it because we wanted anybody who was in the room to control the music. To do this, I used a Raspberry Pi on the local network which would host a web server with an interface to change the music that connected with the Spotify API. It was pretty cool.
